Grandson of Malcolm X Arrested
Posted Jan. 29, 2002 (Middletown, N.Y.) -- The grandson of Malcolm X who set the fire that killed his grandmother in 1997 has been arrested on robbery and burglary charges, police said.
Malcolm Shabazz, 17, was arrested here Jan. 25 while riding in a car that was reportedly stolen, police said. He allegedly gave police a fake name and was charged with a misdemeanor, The Associated Press reported. Middleton is about 60 miles north of New York City.
State police had been looking for Shabazz. He and Thomas Carter-Love, 17, of Wallkill, were charged with two counts of second-degree robbery and one count of first-degree burglary, police said. Carter-Love was arrested Wednesday.
They are accused of assaulting another 17-year-old, robbing him of $100, threatening him with a gun, then going to the victim's home in Wallkill, stealing cash, and assaulting him again, police said. Both were sent to the Orange County Jail.
In 1997, Shabazz, then 12, pleaded guilty to arson for setting the fire that killed his 61-year-old grandmother, Betty Shabazz, in her Yonkers, N.Y., apartment.
Malcolm Shabazz is the son of Qubilah Shabazz, who was charged in 1995 with plotting to kill Nation of Islam Leader Louis Farrakhan. The charges were later dropped.
