Debi Thomas became the first black athlete to win a Winter Olympic medal — a bronze at Calgary in 1988.

She did it while studying pre-med at Stanford and after training in Boulder.

Thomas had been the only skater to beat Witt in five years. Sandwiched right in the middle of Witt's four world championships was Thomas' global title in 1986.

But skating taught her the discipline and precision she said she valued increasingly as she advanced in her medical field. Studying had to be mastered, like a triple jump.

And from the way she sounded, her voice lively but soothingly modulated, Thomas left skating feeling glad to be done, but also glad she'd done it.

Where She Is Now

After winning an Olympic bronze medal, Debi began a successful but short professional career. She won the 1988 and 1989 World Professional Championships while continuing to balance school and skating. In 1991, she graduated from Stanford University and Debi who'd been touring with Stars on Ice officially retired in 1992 to concentrate on her dream of becoming a doctor. Debi attempted a brief comeback at the 1996 Battle of the Sexes but it was a disappointing performance. Her program was never broadcast on American television. In 1997, Debi graduated from Northwestern University's medical school. She is married to sport's attorney, Christopher Bequette. They are the proud parents of son, Luc who was born in July of 1997. She has temporarily postponed her residency and is currently living with her family in Little Rock, Arkansas.
