Urban Exposé's anonymous editor, Crispus Attucks, is really John Lee, a former hacker who once appeared on the cover of Wired magazine.

This morning on WNBC's Today in New York, Lee announced himself as Attucks in an interview with Omar Wasow, a WNBC commentator and executive director of BlackPlanet.com. Though the broadcast was cut short by a snow report, Lee gave a brief statement about going public as the man behind Urban Exposé, saying he plans to expand the focus of the Urban Exposé site.

Lee's announcement ends months of speculation on who is the real force behind Urban Exposé, a site that critiques, through blistering articles and messages, so-called urban-focused business such as Urban Box Office, Hookt.com, and Honey magazine.

So who is Lee? The Brooklyn-based editor gained some notoriety as a member of early-'90s hacker gang Masters of Deception, working under the name Corrupt and appearing on the cover of a 1994 issue of Wired in a story about hackers. He served a year in jail for wire tapping, according to a report in The Industry Standard. Additionally, he has been profiled as a hacker on 60 Minutes and on ABC's World News Tonight. Lee's consulting jobs include working for Alley site Music Maker and Comedy Central.

In an interview this morning, Lee told the Daily he would be leaving his editor post at Urban Exposé. Lee then said he will be hiring another anonymous editor to take over, because "it adds some mystique to the site." Urban Exposé will become more of a community site, with users determining the nature of the content, he added.

Late last year, Urban Exposé announced plans to launch a full-fledged media company that would examine all sections of urban media, from television and film to radio and publishing. But the scheduled Jan. 30 conference to hype the launch of a new Urban Exposé business never took place, according to Siddiq Bello, who had been working as a consultant to the conference.

"There were issues that didn't allow it to go forward. As far as I know, the business aspects of [Urban Exposé] are no longer a priority," Bello said.

"There are still business proposals on the table," said Lee.

Wasow said that Lee mentioned doing TV and media work. And, despite the sometimes caustic nature of Urban Exposé, "in person, John's a charming, nice guy," according to Wasow. But what about all those people the site has slammed--now that Lee has gone public, will it be payback time?

"So I've written things about people that aren't super-cool," said Lee. "But those people were high profile, and they expect criticism. And now that I've come out, now that I'm high profile, I'll be expecting the same criticism."
