Her voice is just as fantastic as her name, but that blonde hair makes me want to ask, “Has Fantasia Barrino become the latest black blonde bimbo?” When I saw her performing on “American Idol,” she stole my heart with her stirring, soulful voice and her Africanized beauty. I knew that she was a star, even before she won. As many of us might have predicted, however, she did the same thing that many other black female singers did upon soaring to fame – dyed her natural hair blonde! Now she joins the ranks of the other black female singers who apparently have been lured into believing that blondes have more fun! I think many of us will agree that her singing voice came from her natural raw talent, the experiences, the pain, the suffering that comes from being a descendant of slaves, and the genes that she inherited from a black mother and father. Yesterday she rocked the rafters on “Live with Regis and Kelly.” Would somebody please tell me why she decided to pay tribute to the Caucasian race by dying her hair blonde? Do you think new black female singers will ever learn to step onto a world stage with their tresses rendered tastefully in a natural hairstyle that does not flatter the locks of the their former slavemasters? Do you think these questions even matter?

Since I've never seen a white female singer wearing an Afro wig, Thinker makes a very good point.
Be realistic and be fair.

THINKER, We have had this discussion several times, and I have to ask why does Fantasia have to be labled a Black Blond Bimbo? As we discussed singers/performers/entertainers (some) wear blond and extensions because of show! These folks do not wear blond to honor whites! Some blacks do look good in the blond shades when they have the right skin tone for it, however most do not look good in blond hair in my opinion, and I know how strongly you feel about it, Lol. But let's give Fantasia some credit. She was (as they say) a hood rat, and anyone can hear that she had a limited education, but she pulled herself up and became somebody! As we have already discussed, let's hope she continues to move forward, and that she takes some of her money to secure an education. PEACE! PS- maybe she is having more fun as a blond! Lol, lol, lol

Do these questions matter? Depends on why you're asking them but to each his own. Natural hair: 1. Jill Scott 2. Erykah Badu 3. Floetry 4. Jaquar Wright 5. What is the girls name with the big fro and bigger voice. I'm stumped right now. lil bruh or AA will know. 6. india.arie(I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations..NO..I am the soul that lives within) 7. Lizz Wright 8. Diane Reeves 9. Oleeta Adams(there are hills and mountains..tween us..ALWAYS something to get o'er) 10. Macie Gray by His grace, ronski30

And I thought I didn't get out much. I've seen white female singers sportin' dreads, cornrows, afro wigs and beaded braids. Really, people are wearing red, blue, purple and green hair as well as tinsel in their hair but then they're puttin' on a show. You might as well accuse Sly Stone or the P-Funk boyz of being too flashy.

while i think the blonde hair is outrageous....what black female persona on television wears her natural hair?? just wondering...name 10 presently!! if you can...the argument about fantasia is credible...if you can not...regonize that you are a hater! additionally....it would be ludicrous as gaylord suggested to see a white dude wearing a buba shokoto and an afro wig....but we fry dye and part our hair to the side, wear windy pants slippery shoes and nooses,( euro dress code) but thats not a double standard.....lmao

Since Video it's been neccessary for india.arie to defend her natural beauty. Why? Because it's NOT accepted as beautiful or desirable. Because people who look like her are not in the positions to decide whether or not the "ideal" is going to be challenged. india (thus far) is willing to accept her "place" to be true to herself and her music. Fantasia may not have that option. When you have certain backing/sponsorship - you kinda gotta go along with their "suggestions". I don't think every black woman who dyes her hair blond is consciously trying to promote white beauty. Why would she? But I do think that wittingly or not - most are playing into the notion. That's how subliminal suggestion works.

ronski31, your infuriated response got me to thinking. I mean really thinking, Sis. So I decided to grade all these singers by the personae that they projected and the singing quality of their voices. Of course I decided to add names of other popular female black singers who sometimes/most times appear onstage with blondenized locks, whether their hair is dyed or just "teased." Let’s have some fun. I’m assigning a “p” to the singers that I consider poor, while taking in consideration the quality of their singing plus their blonde look; and assigning an “E” for excellence if they deserve the high mark for having a standout voice (“EE” for those who are doubly excellent, PP for those I consider doubly poor, etc. Those who are still maturing and will probably deserve an “E” one day I have assigned a “G” for good. Also consider that some of the best singers—e.g., Aretha, has worn her hair blonde from time to time. Others can rate their favorite lady singer, with or without the blonde hair. 1. Jill Scott - E 2. Erykah Badu - E 3. Floetry – E 4. Jaquar Wright - E 5. What is the girls name with the big fro and bigger voice. I'm stumped right now. lil bruh or AA will know. 6. india.arie(I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations..NO..I am the soul that lives within) - E 7. Lizz Wright - E 8. Diane Reeves - E 9. Oleeta Adams(there are hills and mountains..tween us..ALWAYS something to get o'er) - E 10. Macie Gray – E 11. Aretha Franklin – EE 12. Whitney Houston – EE 13. Lil Kim – PP 14. Janet Jackson – E 15. Eve – P 16. Mary J. Blige – P 17. Fantasia – G 18. Patti Labelle – EE 19. Beyonce - G

ronski..regarding the 10 ladies you posted..and the ones thinker has...i will not rate their abilities here...that is not the issue. 1. Jill Scott - E....limited sucess, but why, she is superior vocally, and she is an original 2. Erykah Badu - E....limited success...she is an original...but obscured by the likes of beyonce 3. Floetry – E....limited success 4. Jaquar Wright - E........very limited success, and ive seen her many times with straight hair. 5. What is the girls name with the big fro and bigger voice. I'm stumped right now. lil bruh or AA will know......name a song, cause its not popping into my head 6. india.arie(I am not my hair, I am not this skin, I am not your expectations..NO..I am the soul that lives within) - E...limited success 7. Lizz Wright - E.....never heard of her 8. Diane Reeves - E i assume those are dreadlocks...but i am not familiar with her 9. Oleeta Adams(there are hills and mountains..tween us..ALWAYS something to get o'er) - E...thats not her natural hair 10. Macie Gray – E.....limited success..and shes an original as well...one big song...and what happened?? ------------ now for these 11. Aretha Franklin – EE 12. Whitney Houston – EE 13. Lil Kim – PP 14. Janet Jackson – E 15. Eve – P 16. Mary J. Blige – P 17. Fantasia – G 18. Patti Labelle – EE 19. Beyonce - G ...i cant remember one of them wearing their natural hair except aretha...and that time has long passed realistically, it would be difficult to name black females in the public eye that are au natural...so why diss one aspect of unnatural...what about the makeup, the physical makeup and most importantly the mental make up, what about the dress code...to isolate hair will prove beneficial if we are using that to be the catalyst to adress all of the other white washes that we employ.

It always comes back to the same thing. As sl8 says we have to control our own media then we can set our own standards. Most of these people we criticize are talented, intelligent, success oriented people. Some know as well as we do what the score is, some don't. I doubt that they're going to derail their careers over what we think. In fact, most people right here, aren't going to derail their careers over what we think. Short of some action, on the part of, at least some portion of us or some new ideas that enable or empower us to make real or at least virtual changes nothing is going to happen. So what can we offer Fantasia or any other "Black American" Idols to encourage to emphasize their Blackness? Don't ever forget, where there's a will there's a way.

Hey man, maybe somebody will point Fantasia to this thread, and she will discover that many of her fans want her to look black.

Not lately, AASojourn, although whitey sporting Afro wigs and other type abberrations was the rage back in the sixties, especially the hippies! Anyway, our singers need to be leading the way to racial consciousness. Afterall, nobody with blonde hair is responsible for their great singing voices.

sl8..I still can't think of the child's name. Regarding your rating of limited success...outside of the record sales(which are extremely important)I view the ladies on the list success..in reaching me in some way. Lizz Wright-Jazz thinker, not infuriated just tired of the finger pointing. Maybe it's just me but no question in my mind Fantasia LOOKS black. My goodness. AA I agree. hell to the nah on the derailing of the career. by His grace, ronski30
