1776 The Declaration of Independence is adopted in Philadelphia, after passages condemning the slave trade are deleted from the document.
1827 New York State abolishes slavery.
1875 White Democrats murder black Republicans in Vicksburg, Mississippi as the white South wrests political control away from African Americans during Reconstruction.
1910 Boxer Jack Johnson beats Jim Jeffries, The Great White Hope, in a heavyweight championship match at Reno, Nevada. Boxing was symbolic of black-white tensions and Johnson's victory was a triumph for African Americans and a disaster for whites.
1991 The National Civil Rights Museum opens in Memphis, Tennessee, at the Lorraine Motel, the site of Martin Luther King, Jr.'s 1968 assassination.
