1776 James Forten is born free in Philadelphia. He will become a wealthy sail manufacturer and devote his energy and fortune to the abolition of slavery. He will be one of the founders of the American Anti-Slavery Society and subsidize William Lloyd Garrison.
1733 Thomas Paul, Sr. is born free in Exeter, New Hampshire. He will become minister of the African Baptist Church in Boston, and his family will become active in New England religious and Abolitionist movements.
1943 The Liberty Ship Frederick Douglass is torpedoed and sunk in the Atlantic by Germany during World War II.
1960 Wilma Rudolph becomes the first American woman to win three gold medals at the Olympic Games.
